about

It comes from dimensions unknown. Wilderness of Love, the smoke-colored debut album by mystical prophets Shadow Band, sounds more conjured than recorded. When the sprawling collective decided it was time to document their dark craft, rather than choosing to work in a traditional recording studio, they dove headlong into their time honored method of capturing late night jams on mouldering home-recording devices. Oblivious to life outside, the band laid down sounds that could only happen in these contained moments of silent enlightenment.

The album that resulted is indeed a product of the wild. The eleven songs here travel on a misty journey through both lantern-lit psyche-folk dirges and depraved deathknell blues, wobbling in the balance of paranoia and universal understanding. The homespun production mirrors the low-lit environment in which the album was made, with strange stringed instruments, theremin vibrations and buried percussion all washing by as a singular, alien texture. Songs melt with the sound of distant birds and pagan pan flutes only to rise up in swells of unholy synth. Mellow but godless, the Shadow Band creates their own reality, reflecting on the dying embers of haunted dreams but moving ever forward through the dusk.

about

Shadow Band Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Riding in on a cloud of smoke, psychedelic travelers Shadow Band sound more like a foggy dream of fantastical lands than any easily identifiable set of musical choices. Their patient but powerful sounds set in motion a series of refracting echoes, conjuring up images of medieval battles, blissed-out trips and the haze of a sleep-deprived commune of heads in a state of perpetual vibing. ... more

Track Name: Green Riverside
Your muddy banks to walk
And moss-covered stone
Will you sing me your song?
Are you hiding it from me?
Will you keep so secretive?
And so, there must be a reason
In the evening
Your sad fountains weep
Young lady don't lie to me
Last night I was lost
A grey fog of grey thought
Tried to swallow me whole
When I meet you I'll have cast a thousand stones
I'll be bones upon bones
I'll be glowing like a ghost
Track Name: Endless Night
Unwinding roads yield winding paths
Beware the deadly dragon's breath
A dark harp of sorrows I'll bare
O dark globe I roam
When love’s in bud
A virgin light
The moon it glows
The sun it shines
No time to fear the hourglass
Put out the flame or make it last

The fog rolls in
All fades to white
All things are lost in endless night
A falling feeling fills me whole
O wings of love return once more

To feel the winds that weed the grass
And see the mists as they come to pass
I love to see the flowers amass
My love to reap, to sow
Track Name: Shadowland
Just say the word
My loving bird
I'll be in flight
To see you tonight

I had a fall
In a shadow land
In the dragon's lair
In the coal black sand

I had a walk
Where the trees are bare
Black winter snares
Await me there

Cast your line and reel
Let your love shine down

(((O))) how I've longed
For the promised land
Where the grass is green
And the children dance
Track Name: Eagle Unseen
Darkness has fallen
Thick is the fog
Join howl with the wild white wolves

Winter has come

I hear a war knocking at the door
Tales of the eagle unseen
I smell the fear welling in our souls

Winter has come
In the Dark Night of Saint John
There's nowhere to run
Winter has come
Darkness has fallen
Track Name: In the Shade
Softly she speaks in waves
Her words are snakes
To worm their way in
Awfully plain to see
She is for you, she is for me
A lovely place to be

In the shade
No one can see

Tongues of lily white
Don't shield your eyes
A mouth of mire to taste your sides
Lonely in the grass I'm free at last
Walk with me again
Through the woods of no regret

It's a lovely place to be
In the shade
No one can see
Track Name: Indian Summer
Indian summer with Mary J
Sing for the colors and for a change
No one can see me from where I am
It's city living that's killing them

Indian summer
A little longer

Hello the rain cloud above my head
You cannot touch me
A silver meadow I wander in
A golden forest in autumn's peak

Indian summer
A little longer
Spend the night with me
Track Name: Morning Star
Western wind wash over me again
As it's written in the stars
A light shall pierce the dark

To color me with calm confidence
To bring bread
and fruit and gold
I hunger for it all

Through mists and rain my chalice awaits

The earth does shake with the coming of the end
Fear not her icy touch,
Kind mother loves her sons.
The earth does shake with the coming of the end
As it's written in the stars
A light shall pierce the dark

Take her hand again
Through mists and rain my chalice awaits
Western wind wash over me again
Track Name: Mad John
Big hairy-armed monster
Whiskey on the brain
Chasing all the girls away
When mad John comes from the wood
Mad johns up to no good
Madman John, he's on the prowl again
His mean red eyes will cut right through your skin
When mad John comes from the wood
Mad John's up to no good
He'll blow your houses down
He'll terrify your town
He'll stamp your fire out
When Mad John comes from the wood
Mad John's up to no good
Track Name: Illuminate
O mighty wind
In loving wise
Sing sylphid sing your song of light
O great and mighty king, whisperer of secret things
Sing sylphid sing to the Salamander King

Eternal queen
In loving wise
O how the days have passed me by
Sing sylphid sing to the salamander king
May the dying embers be kindled
Once more and forevermore
Track Name: Darksiders' Blues
O cold, dark age
To my dismay
Under shadow rule
O wicked cave
What can a poor boy do?
Pray for deluge
What can a poor boy do?
Sing the doomsday blues
I can see you there
In the setting sun
In the ashes and the flames
in the locust swarm
And in the boiling ocean's deep
I hear a voice of reckoning
The end is nigh, the future bleak
Our tired race could use some sleep
Oh, cold, dark age
To my dismay
Under shadow rule
Oh, wicked cave
O police state

Just a glowing ember, a gust of wind is all I seek
A flame to be to light your wick
Illuminate the crawling spaces
Track Name: Daylight
Want
To feel
Alive
Dizzy in the green grass
For the days
For the nights I've laid waste
Books for the brain
Ghosts to their graves
Pour their souls out into nothing
Look see the rain
It's going away
The sunlight is coming out today
We'll dance dance dance
Dance around the green man
The gravestones are talking to me
